Fascinating article about how companies walk away from bad loans with none of the remorse we are supposed to feel.

Pier View Lounge
I drove by the closed Pier View Lounge in Malibu today and got curious what is going on… first I found an article from 2003 about it’s closing… 2003! Then I found an article from the New York Times in 2007 saying the new owner is Oracle founder Larry Ellison and that something could be happening soon… yet that was 2007 and I drove by today the parking lot is still full of...

iPad... maybe it's not for you
I post because some have asked my opinion… I like what Apple is doing with the iPad. I don’t think it is a fit for everyone, and that’s OK. Using me as an example, I don’t think I need a Laptop, an iPhone and an iPad. I do think it opens up new markets and will sell very well. I think it ticks most of the boxes people use laptops for - email, web, music, photos, movies,...

Smoking in movies
CBS Sunday morning had a story about a group looking to have R ratings assigned to any movie that features characters smoking cigarettes, they used Avatar as an example.
I don’t know how I feel about that but I do think the filmmaker should avoid taking the viewer out of the film and in Avatar when we first see Sigourney Weaver’s character smoking, I had an immediate, negative...

Digital surpassing film? →
Off Hollywood got RED Cameras #006 and #007 upgraded to the new Mysterium X sensor and went for a night photo walk at 1600 ASA. Digital cinema has been trying to get to the same quality as film for a long time but we are heading for the next phase when digital far outperforms film. (The Off Hollywood server is getting slammed, they posted an alternate link.)

Apple Event Speculation
I am going to add my guess to the upcoming (27th) Apple event.
There has been a lot of talk about a pay model for other content like newspapers and magazines and that is where I think Apple will go on top of whatever hardware. Perhaps a micro payment system… want to read the full article, that will cost you a few cents… after a few articles from same source you are offered a online...

History repeats itself? With all the talk about cheap wages and stories like this we are destined to see our labor history replayed around the globe. VFX shops will follow the same path… especially because information cannot be contained, we are all connected.
History lessons via Monorail
Last night there was a TV show on about monorails. They showed how monorails can be built on existing roadways for less cost, run silently and yet very few cities have adopted. They also told a story about Los Angeles that I had not heard. In 1963 Alweg built a monorail in Seattle for the Worlds Fair that was so successful they offered to build 40 miles of monorail in LA for FREE! The deal was...

Conan and new opportunities
The Networks and the 11:30pm time slot are not relevant. Leave Leno to ride the geriatric train old model as they grasp to maintain their old profit centers. I’d like to see Conan do something new and I’m not talking about moving to FOX.
At the heart this is a broken model crying out for innovation to upset it. I doubt it will happen but I’d love to see Conan lead the charge to...
