No more plastic bags
A while back I picked up a cloth shopping bag from a local market, then another at Trader Joes because it looked well made. I had heard that LA was looking at banning plastic bags and I thought why not try these. I am now a convert.
They hold more, are easier to carry and most stores give a credit back for the plastic bags you would have used. What used to take us about 10 bags usually fits into...

Economic Indicators, local edition
I asked the cashier at the grocery store why they always have a “no cash back” sign at the register. She said that she has been working in grocery for 18 years and never seen so many credit card transactions, even for purchases under $1. She said they simply don’t ever have the cash in the registers.
It’s stunning where this election is going to be decided on, or what we...

Retail is doomed
Yesterday: Amazon, search for disk drive, 1 click, it arrives tomorrow (I ordered too late for next day).
This morning: I decide I need a 2nd drive, there is a store across street. Same drive is more expensive, haggle price, gets close but still slightly higher, rings me up. Then I hear “oops I rang you for cash” - void and start over. Then goes into back to get drive, long delay,...

Downtown LA
Because of the Siggraph convention I spent more time in downtown Los Angeles in the past week than all the rest of our time living in LA. There are districts for Fashion, Flowers, Toys, Jewelry, Industrial, an Old Bank District… I found this overall guide.
One place I passed repeatedly that caught my eye had a black high gloss tile wall with a neon sign: Golden Gopher. We never stopped in...

Springer on This American Life
Check out this edition of This American Life (a rerun from 2004) for an interesting profile of Jerry Springer, a story you probably don’t know. I admired him when he was Mayor of Cincinnati, he had great ideas and was amazing at getting out and talking to the people. When I was working at the TV station he was brought in to do commentary and later anchor the news. Jerry is one of the hardest...

Simple iPhone way to add contacts
I hate retyping contacts from web sites or cards. I used to leave a restaurant I liked and grab a card and then type it in - but the iPhone with the whole push thing makes this easy, if not obvious. Go to the Map application and hit your location, then search for the restaurant. Click the triangle next to the name and push pin and at the bottom of the options in the results there is a save to...
